I bought an 8 port controller card for sata drives and when it arrived I
couldn't understand why there were no sata sockets on it only these

https://ibb.co/4RvdP6R

I think I have sussed it but need someone to confirm before I spend any more
money or return the card. Is it one of these I need:-

https://ibb.co/SdcmdVs

One end goes into one of the 2 sockets on the card then I simply plug the 4
leads into the 4 hard drives and I am good to go? I don't need 8
.....yet....but it's good to know I can expand if necessary!

Thanks for any advice.

SAS ports, with four SATA channels in each.

Yep.

Should be. LSI SAS cards are widely supported across any OS you might
put on PC hardware.

Technically speaking they're SFF-<number> ports, can't tell from that angle
but probably SFF-8087

Used because there isn't space for a lot of cables or connectors, especially
when hooking up backplanes.

Yep.
+1. The cable can also carry a second channel for each port for SAS and some
status LEDs, but a regular SATA connection will ignore those.

Yep. If it's a branded card (IBM etc) it's also possible to reflash with
generic firmware to unlock more options.

Thanks guys after I posted I did some further reading and verified my
understanding was correct. I have now installed the card and everything is
looking good I just have to re-arrange my drives now I bought one of these
5.25" bays that take 4 x 2.5" ssd's so I now have spaces for 16 drives and
there will only be 3 left when I am finished lol

Thanks for the help and extra info. It was 8086 Jaimie!
