I am about to move a friend from an old laptop to a new one.

Last time I did this (to W10) there was a free version of Laplink with W10.

Apparently this is no longer free, and you have to but PCMover.

Has anyone done this, or used an alternative method?

I want to transfer the user, all programmes, and the associated data to
the brand new system.

PCMover also has several variants, I understand.
Which is the minimum cost one which would do all I require?

Alternative strategies such as backup old system, restore to new system
then upgrade W10 -> W11?

It looks to potentially be a lot more work than last time.

Cheers

I am currently battling with PC Mover Pro.

At the first attempt everything seemed to work, except I managed to move
the main user into the temporary work user I had set up on the new PC.

There is a feature to reverse the move, but since using that I have been
getting different failure messages at each attempt.
This is a long learning process.

Looking at a Microsoft site it recommends using backup and restore.

Has anyone used this to move from a W10 machine to a W11 machine?

I assume that the first stage is an install of W10 on a different
processor which then has to sort out all the drivers and then upgrade to
W11.
This may lose the bespoke bits of the Dell W11 installation that came with
the PC.
Has anyone gone this route?

Cheers

Nearly there.
I think one issue is 32 bit applications which will not transfer.

Had a real battle with Thunderbird but I think I have finally sorted it.

Now waiting for my registration on the support forum to be confirmed so I
can report back.

I am so out of practice with all this computing stuff.

Cheers

I've just set up a new laptop PC. It came with W11 installed. I logged
into my windows account, and it transferred across all the documents
etc. I logged into Chrome for my bookmarks and passwords. I then
installed the handful of programs I use.

From what you're saying, my approach may be easier than using a
transfer programme that only does part of the job.

I also have a completely clean Windows install, without any risk of
issues with the old laptop being transferred across. Of course, it
helps that I don't use a huge number of programmes.
