I have been looking at mobo reviews and I can't believe my eyes. They have
sections on the aesthetics of the board (one board lost points because it
was white) and whether or not it runs flashing LEDs.

I know I am ancient but seriously?

I recently bought some memory sticks without realising that they have a
flashing rainbow LED show when they are powered up :-\

Last time I bought a case I found it quite hard to get one that didn't
have a transparent panel in the side to show off the mood lighting on
the mobo.

Yeah, sad.

I suppose the case makers think that anyone who wants to build their own
PC rather than buying Dell/HP/Lenovo must be an incurable geek who will
appreciate that kind of thing.

A sad reflection of the modern world where Microsoft leads the way in
removing/hiding functionality in favour of making things pretty.
